This year’s parade on Easter Sunday marked the 48th annual event, which took a three-year hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Grandeur & Grove Events is the new organizer for the parade this year after it had been passed down from Echelon Events. Tunstall Bagley Willis, owner of Grandeur & Grove Events, was aiming to keep the parade the same as it has been since 1973.

However, a new addition to the parade, as of last year, is a partnership with the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia (BHMVA). Faithe Norrell, cultural history specialist for BHMVA, said they were excited to be back for a second year.

“We’re so excited to be adding a little flavor to the (parade) with our music and entertainment,” Norrell said. “It was really well received last year. People said they loved hearing the jazz and the (other) music.”

Keeping with tradition, the parade welcomed vendors of all kinds from food and drink to clothing to dog treats. The annual bonnet contest, a must-see for many parade-goers, for both people and dogs occurred toward the end of the event.

One vendor, Precious Turner with the Flower Lady, sold Easter bonnets at the parade to pay for law school. She, in partnership with her mother, has been making bonnets for years and is selling them on her own for the first time this year.

“I stayed up until about 3 o’clock in the morning working on these hats,” Turner said.

Drawing inspiration from her grandmother, who Turner said was very traditional in her style, and the movie “My Fair Lady,” Turner makes hats of many different colors and styles. She even makes dog collars for the parade pups. Turner also has a personal collection of about 80 vintage hats, she said.
